Role Of Nutrition During Critical Window Period For Autism Prevention

Tue Jun 7, 2022

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental con-dition characterized by social, communication, and behavioral challenges. As there is no specific cause which can result in Autism spectrum disorder. But there are few factors - such as genetics and environment factors

Furthermore, there are evidence from a research that indicates that differences in brain anatomy and connectivity in children with ASD compared to those who are typically developing [Ha, Sohn, Kim, Sim, & Cheon, 2015] point to prenatal origins [Kaushik & Zarbalis, 2016].

This is why factors that can influence neuro-development during pregnancy are considered to be the major cause of ASD.

According to research [Blencowe, Cousens, Modell, & Lawn, 2010], pregnancy nutritional diet can influence neurodevelopment. Such as mother having fish - a source of both long-chain polyunsatu- rated fatty acids (PUFAs) but also of heavy metals, has been associated with certain child cognitive outcomes [Oken, Osterdal, et al., 2008; Strain et al., 2012], as have iron/maternal anemia, and Vitamin D [Boksa, 2010; Garcia-Serna & Morales]

Over the years many studies were conducted and ASD have emerged over the past decade, though the majority to date has focused on folate, vitamin supplements, and Vitamin D.

How Nutrition And Diet Affects ASD

In the past, women were encouraged to "eat for two" during pregnancy; however, now this is held to be detrimental to the health of both mother and child. There has been a lot of research done which recommends a woman should spend up to a year preparing for pregnancy. It endorses important dietary and lifestyle choices to ensure she is at her optimal fitness level when she conceives. Among these choices are organically grown vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, and lean proteins.

1) Folate In Your Diet

Ensure you know which foods contain folate. The question seems to be how much folate to consume and when. If you're worried about the amount of vitamin B12 and folate you're taking, either through supplements or diet, make a food diary in which you note all your supplements and daily food intake. Book an appointment with Dr. Ashutosh Bhardwaj to consult about your concerns so he can reassure you or suggest changes. It is important you talk to your doctor about your folate intake.

2) Using Fats

By using vegetable oils and eating a diet rich in nuts and seeds, you can increase your intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids. You don't want to consume more calories, so your total fats should remain the same.
  • Replace foods containing saturated fats, such as butter and cream, with vegetable oils.
  • Check the label to find out what kind of fats they contain.
  • Cut down on cheese and fatty cuts of beef and pork.
